In keeping with the programs under its 2019 Communication Plan for Minerals Development, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII continued to raise awareness on its regulatory functions and the socioeconomic contributions of the minerals industry. The Awareness on Mineral Resources and Geosciences and IEC Campaign on Gender and Development were conducted on May 8 to 10, 2019 at Barangays Mahayahay, Don Ruben and San Juan in the Municipality of San Jose, Province of Dinagat Islands. The Officials and Staff of the aforementioned barangays participated in the activity. Identified representatives from the academe, religious sector and civil society organizations were also invited to take part in it. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII played a part in the document evaluation and field validation of identified river systems as entries for the 2018 Search for Recognizing Individuals/Institutions towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (R.I.V.E.R.S.) for Life Award launched by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The DENR Caraga Regional Executive Director, Atty. Felix S. Alicer, issued a Special Order creating the Regional Committee on the R.I.V.E.R.S. for Life Search Program which comprised representatives from DENR Caraga Regional Office and its Line Bureaus. To heighten the awareness of the religious sector on mining, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII conducted the Awareness on Mineral Resources in the Provinces of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands for the Diocese of Surigao on April 10, 2019 at the Cathedral Parish Hall of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish in Surigao City. The activity aimed to enrich the knowledge of the religious sector on mineral resources in general and the mining industry in particular. It was attended by the clergy, nuns, seminarians and Social Action workers of the Diocese of Surigao. Mr. Romeo M. In line with the National Groundwater Resource Mapping and Assessment Program of the DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau, a technical team from the Geosciences Division of MGB Regional Office No. XIII carried out the 1:50,000 scale Groundwater Resource Mapping and Assessment in Malimono, Surigao del Norte from March 18 to 30, 2019. This project is the next phase after the completion of the 1:250,000 scale, province-wide Groundwater Resource Mapping and Assessment in 2018. It aims to determine the groundwater availability in relation to the local geological setting; identify potential areas for future groundwater development and/or extraction; and identify factors that may affect the water quality of the existing water supply in the target area. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII supported the various activities of the 2019 National Women’s Month Celebration. It took part in the 9th General Assembly, Opening of the Women’s Month Celebration and Press Conference spearheaded by the Regional Development Council – Regional Gender and Development Committee on March 1, 2019 at VCDU Prince Hotel and Grand Convention Center in Butuan City. Similarly, MGB RO No. XIII personnel attended the RGADC-led Women Summit during the International Women’s Day Celebration on March 8, 2019 at Butuan Grand Palace Hotel in Butuan City. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau held the 2019 Geoscience Workshop on February 18-22, 2019 at the Xenia Hotel in Clark Freeport Zone, Angeles City, Pampanga. Geologists from the MGB Central Office and the Regional Offices attended the said workshop in preparation for the agency’s continuing geoscientific programs. On the first day of the workshop, an opening ceremony and a safety briefing were conducted. Presentations from MGB Central Office then followed. Ms. Liza Socorro J. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII held an Orientation-Workshop on the Revised MGB Form No. 29-16 and Other Monitoring Reports Relative to Mineral Statistics and Economics and Regional Memorandum No. 2018-08 on January 30–31, 2019 at the Philippine Gateway Hotel in Surigao City. This is in line with the ongoing thrust of the government to effectively monitor the wealth accruing to the government and communities as a result of mining, particularly in the administration and disposition of mineral resources. To supplement its continuing technical capability building and to strengthen the enforcement of standard shipment monitoring procedure under Regional Memorandum No. 2018-08 re: “Revised Procedural Guidelines in Shipment Verification / Monitoring of Minerals / Mineral Products and By-Products Including Tailings,”the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XIII conducted a Workshop on the Fundamentals of Draft Survey on January 23-24, 2019 at the MGB ROXIII Training Center in Surigao City. Attended by 25 technical personnel, the two-day workshop featured topics, namely Governing Concepts and Principles; Practical Guide to Reading Draft Marks; and Calculations and Corrections, with written and board exercises in between to stimulate utmost learning and participation. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) held its 1st Quarter Management Conference on January 8-11, 2019 at the Bayview Hotel in Manila. The said conference was called for by the MGB Central Office to have in-depth reviews and discussions about the following: 2018 Year-end Assessment. The Central Office and Regional Offices each presented their physical and financial accomplishments for the calendar year in review. 2019 Action Planning. A break-out session per division was undertaken to discuss and address issues and concerns in the implementation of existing targets and activities; standardize new activities being programmed for the succeeding years; and evaluate potential adjustment of target and projects and programs to align with the changing priority thrusts and directives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) top management and new rules and regulations imposed by other National Agencies.
