The Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association, in cooperation with the DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers, the minerals industry and other professional organizations, held the 69th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference with the theme MINING 4.0: Safer, Smarter and Sustainable on November 14 to 17, 2023 in Baguio City.

The Opening Program and Mining Exhibit took place on November 14 at the CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center.  It was followed by the Community Relations Conference which featured various presentations on the far-reaching social development efforts of the minerals industry on November 15 at the same venue. The said conference was graced by no less than Ambassador MaryKay Loss Carlson, United States of America Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of the Philippines.  Moreover, the Youth Congress was held at Hotel Henrico while sports events such as badminton, bowling and golf were held at Gil Puyat Sports and Baguio Country Club.

Mining stakeholders and luminaries took part in the Minerals Industry Symposium on November 16 at the CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center.  It was graced by DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Yu and Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines David Hartman who expressed their full support to the Philippine minerals industry.

On the last day of the event, scores of staunch supporters from the minerals industry, several universities and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Central Office and Regional Offices participated in the vibrant Minerals Industry Parade to uphold the minerals industry’s commitment to occupational safety and health, sound environmental management and social responsibility.  At the Melvin Jones Grandstand, the Mine Safety Field Demonstration and Field Competition took place.  Fire-fighting, first aid, hand mucking, machine drilling and tug of peace were the events during the day after which an awarding ceremony ensued. The event culminated in the Awards Night and Testimonial Dinner wherein the best mining forest and the best achievements in the fields of mine safety and health, environmental protection and social development through the Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award were accorded their well-deserved recognition. Caraga mining companies received awards that affirm the region’s significant accomplishments and firm commitment to responsible mining.
