The Mines and Geosciences Bureau held the 2019 Geoscience Workshop on February 18-22, 2019 at the Xenia Hotel in Clark Freeport Zone, Angeles City, Pampanga.
Geologists from the MGB Central Office and the Regional Offices attended the said workshop in preparation for the agency’s continuing geoscientific programs.
On the first day of the workshop, an opening ceremony and a safety briefing were conducted. Presentations from MGB Central Office then followed. Ms. Liza Socorro J. Manzano, Supervising Science Research Specialist, gave the Presentation on Geopark while Ms. Jocelyn C. Villanueva, Senior Science Research Specialist, presented Laboratory Matters.
Discussions were held on the second day of the activity. Ms. Carleen Joy T. Gatdula, Senior Science Research Specialist, discussed the Geodatabase. The following parallel sessions then came after the said discussion: Geologic Quadrangle Mapping facilitated by Dr. Maybelline A. Zepeda, Supervising Geologist; Groundwater Resource Assessment facilitated by Mr. Aniano D. Torres, Supervising Science Research Specialist; and Updating of the 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps and Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA) and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign facilitated by Mr. Salvio B. Laserna, Supervising Science Research Specialist.
Parallel sessions continued on day three of the activity. The Mineral Reservation Program was facilitated by Mr. Raymundo I. Villones, Supervising Science Research Specialist, while Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) was presented by Mr. Carl Reiner T. Padua. On the same note, Subsidence Hazard Assessment was facilitated by Ms. Liza Socorro J. Manzano, Supervising Science Research Specialist, and Groundwater Resource Assessment was presented by Mr. Aniano D. Torres, Supervising Science Research Specialist.
The parallel sessions included the review of the 2018 accomplishments of the MGB Central Office and Regional Offices; discussion of the targets for CY 2019; and issues and concerns for each of the programs/projects/activities.
During the workshop, the participating geologists from the MGB Central Office and Regional Offices presented their respective accomplishments concerning the various geoscience programs/projects/activities, namely Geologic Quadrangle Mapping; Mineral Reservation; Groundwater Resource Assessment; Updating of 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps; Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA); Information, Education, and Communication Campaign on VRA; and Subsidence Hazard Assessment.
An open forum which comprised the synthesis and presentation of the Minutes of the Workshop ensued in the afternoon of day three. It was followed by a closing ceremony.
The activity culminated in a field trip to Mt. Pinatubo specially organized by the MGB Central Office for the workshop participants.
